I had a clogged kitchen sink and Boyd Plumbing was the first company I had come out. Eric R. was my technician and he took the time to explain to me the various issues I was facing beyond just the clogged sink. Eric was incredibly professional, kind, informative, and polite. He was able to get the work done extremely fast and even took extra time to walk me through some additional steps I could take on my own to keep my system working properly. I have nothing but positive things to say about Boyd and especially Eric. Boyd will be the first call I make next time I have a plumbing issue!
I called Boyd Plumbing to handle a sewage back up at my home. Brandy was super friendly and managed to get me an appointment within a couple hours on a Sunday. Alex was the technician who came out and he was great! He was very thorough with his job and took the time to explain all of the aspects of the plumbing issue in depth. He showed me the images from the camera and went into detail about what had caused the issue. I highly recommend Boyd Plumbing, especially Alex!
Look no further..... Boyd plumbing is a first class business and I have had a vast amount of experience with plumbing issues over decades. Stephen B. came to our home a few months ago for a big project and his work ethic is stellar. He is incredibly efficient, makes a good diagnosis, has all of his equipment ready to go including a ladder. A true gentleman. The other interesting thing about this company is the email that precedes the service call explaining with a photo who the technician is and a little information about him. I have never seen anything like this and was very impressed. I must push the girls who answer the phone into the spotlight because they are the first experience we have with a company. These girls understand urgent situations and are very experienced in making certain that the customer gets immediate service if necessary. They were amazing! I cannot say enough great things about Boyd plumbing. Their staff and service is exemplary! ~Christine Percival
Never called to tell me what was wrong with my rental property. Just sent an invoice even though I explicitly asked to be given a call and for details. Would not recommend.
I had satisfactorily used Boyd more than once in the past but the company has been absorbed/merged by Bonney Plumbing. I got an estimate from them but it was over $4000 more than the work done by a different and better small company, First Call Plumbing. Read their reviews and call them! I think the reviews for Boyd should be taken down since that entity no longer exists.
We reached out to Boyd because our 50 gallon electric water heater stopped producing the same quantity of hot water as before (my wife likes hot baths in her new tub!). The "technician" (Boyd's doesn't call their guys "plumbers") that responded was courteous and professional...but seemed to be very inexperienced! For the prices Boyd's charges, their "technicians" should be seasoned pros! When touching the outside of the heater tank, we felt that the upper half was warm, and the lower half was room temperature. He seemed to be perplexed as to how that could be! His first recommendation, before any diagnostics, was to replace the tank at a cost of about $2,500! Yikes! I pressed him into doing some testing of the components to see if there was something simpler causing the problem,...he suggested that we drain the tank to see if there was any sediment build up since the tank is 9 years old, and has never drained. His fee was $250.00 to attach a hose to the bit coming out of the bottom of the tank, and turn a stop cock a quarter turn with a screwdriver! Ouch! It took me a minute to agree, because that seemed like a LOT of money for such a simple task, but I felt that maybe I was paying for his experience and he would be able to tell by the run off if I had a problem. Net result...clean water...no sediment. $250.00...cha-ching! The next thing he thought of, after I asked a LOT of questions, was that maybe the heating element was out. He pulled out a electric current tester and saw that power was being provided to the element. He seemed to have hit a roadblock. When I started reading the spec label pasted to the unit, I saw where it mentioned Upper and LOWER heating elements! He had NO IDEA there was a 2nd element in the lower half of the unit! He unscrewed the cover plates for both elements, and it looked like the lower element and saw that it wasn't conducting electricity properly. At that point the suggestion was to replace both heating elements. The cost of heating elements is about $20.00 each. He charged $657.00 to unscrew the old ones and provide new ones! Again, I felt that the labor charge would be justified by experience. Nope! When he completed the job, he knocked at my door and said that, unfortunately, the replacement/repair didn't work in that the upper half of the tank still felt hot, and the lower was at room temperature. At this point, I was feeling a bit taken. I had just approved almost $900 in "repairs", and my original problem had NOT been solved. I asked him to retest the electrical current to make sure both elements were getting power. When doing so, he accidentally touched two hot leads and created a huge spark and crackling sound! It surprised him (and me), and his immediate response was "that's where I draw the line". He stopped doing any other tests, replaced the covers and billed me $757.00 for the efforts (he discounted $150.00 from the original flush quote). After he left, I was pretty dismayed to have spent so much money and still had a defective Water Heater. I reached out to a friend for a referral to another plumber to get a 2nd opinion. And here's where it get's MORE interesting! In the morning, my wife tried to take a shower, and she had NO hot water! The Heater wasn't working at all! The 2nd plumber showed up in the afternoon and ran a couple of simple electric current tests. We were getting power from the main fuse to the Disconnect Box...but NO juice from the Disconnect Box to the unit! When the Boyd's "technician" shorted the system the day before, he blew BOTH fuses in the Disconnect! I don't know if he even knew there was a Disconnect Box, because he had never mentioned it to me. Because he was so surprised and had stopped the job, he didn't bother to complete the electrical test of all components of the system! The 2nd plumber showed me how to replace the fuses in the Box and test the flow of electricity. I ran up to Lowe's and bought 2 new fuses for $3.00 and a tester pen for $15.00. I replaced the fuses and low and behold...power to BOTH heating elements! The rest of the story is that both the top and bottom of my tank feel hot to the touch, thus both elements are doing their jobs! So...I am not complaining about spending money to having a PRO fix my issue, but when I pay a PRO, I expect the end result to be a problem solved! Before I am told I need a new water heater, I would have expected that the technician do a few basic steps to see if a simpler fix could be had! The 2nd plumber did say that Boyd's pays its Technicians by commission, so that may explain why the initial suggestion was to replace! As a footnote, the 2nd plumber DID NOT bill be for a service call since all he had to do was check the electrical current and the conductivity of the fuses. Guess who I am going to call when I have replace my 9 year old Water Heater! Don't be afraid to use Boyd's, but expect to pay up and ask for experience!
So, I want to be fair about this. I contacted Boyd in an emergency situation, having used them twice before at two different rentals. They were not wildly expensive the first time, did a good job diagnosing the problem, but really didn't do much except look in the sewer pipe with the camera. I get there's a minimum charge, which I paid gladly. For the second job (a shower that had the hot and cold reversed by the previous owner), it took several people coming out to get the job done correctly, the people being the original worker, the owner, and the last technician, who it seemed fixed the issue. I very much appreciated Michael coming out and taking responsibility, and I intended to use Boyd going forward. Two things happened since that caused me to give the one star rating. When they arrived for the emergency situation, a whole house sewer backup after calling the Sac County Sewer District who determined it wasn't their issue, I was quoted a price. Since I trusted Boyd and since it was not a situation that could wait, I authorized the work, which basically was making a hole in the ground to find and then access the sewer line, and putting a camera in the hole in the pipe. They had to remove a toilet to access the line, and all told, they were there several hours. After a bit of examination with the camera, it was pretty clear that it was a Sewer District issue. They came out and cleared the blockage. Boyd's bid did not include the cleanout, which was basically essential at that point. When I spoke with the Sewer District and mentioned the cost, they were frankly shocked that the original price didn't include a cleanout. The bid from Boyd to do that ranged from nearly $1000 to nearly $3000, and the Sewer District recommended I get another bid, since this was no longer a huge emergency. Needless to say, I got another bid. The bid I received to install the cleanout soup to nuts was $500. The company technician who did the work nearly laughed out loud when I told him the cost of the original work that didn't include the cleanout. That company would have charged me less than that for the complete job, including digging, opening up the pipe, using the camera (which they did as part of the $500), and installing a cleanout. I had several conversations with Michael about this, but he wouldn't even entertain the notion of a partial refund to retain my business. Ok. Well, so much for customer retention, but we ended the conversation cordially. Then, I had a problem with the shower from the second job mentioned previously. My tenant reported a really bad leak, with water flowing down the wall underneath the shower. I called the company that finished the sewer work for the second job, since there was no way I was going to call Boyd. They found that Boyd didn't actually solder several sections of pipe completely, and in at least one case hadn't even seated the pipe completely. In addition, Boyd didn't secure the pipe to the wall, so that anyone using the shower mechanism would continually move the whole mechanism inside the wall, which means that even if it had been soldered completely, the joint would fail eventually! So far, this has cost me an additional $850, and that doesn't include repair to the wall and ceiling downstairs. Boyd has a warranty, and I suppose I could have contacted them, but given what was found, it was too late, since it took a while to determine the problem, and I obviously no longer trusted that Boyd would fix the problem properly. The bottom line is that Boyd is wildly over-priced and the workmanship was poor. On the upside, Michael was pleasant throughout.
I heard the screams, a mix of panic and joy coming from my 10 year old. "Dad, the water won't drain in the sink!", finishing with a slight smile and glimmer of hope in his eye that his chores might be done with this unforeseen calamity. After an extensive trouble shooting, consisting of running hot water into the ever rising sea of dirty dish water, I deduced that the sink was indeed clogged. I praised my son for his intelligence and asked him to get the plunger. He quickly returned with a toilet brush, for which the praise previously given now seemed premature. Once we established what a plunger was, and got the correct tool, I began to plunge. Plunge like I was turning butter, plunge like my wife's happiness was solely dependent on the kitchen being clean when she got home. The plunging was futile... Again, thinking about my near future and the lesson, "happy wife, happy life", I quickly packed 3 of the 4 kids into the car, leaving the fourth behind to think about his earlier plunger mistake. I ran to the nearest hardware store, bought a 25' drain snake, and came home full of confidence that I would prove to be the man of the house that I was born to be. I would be the man, the kitchen would be clean, the wife would be happy, my son would be smarter. It seemed ideal...until the snake didn't clear the drain. In a panic and with time running short, I packed all 4 kids in the car; in my panicked mind, I had to get this drain clear, and I was going to clear it with chemicals. After pouring the whole bottle down both sink drains, I waited, willing the liquid with my mind to clear a path so that the kitchen could be clean for my wife's arrival. Unfortunately, it didn't work. So we ordered pizza and I had a beer. Today I requested quotes to fix it, the wife already displeased that the sink was out of use and the kitchen dirty. Boyd Plumbing was the quickest to respond to my plea. They were able to set up an appointment for me at the end of the day. Jake came to review the work, and he was great. Quoted me a price that seemed fair given the time and the fact that I wanted to put my son back to work on the kitchen. He was very professional, friendly and timely. He let me pick his brain about prevention, and when it was all said and done, it was truly all said and done. Drain drains, kids clean, and wife's happiness ensued. Thank you Jake and Boyd Plumbing. You have earned a customer!
Beware, they do not take responsibility for their mistakes. We paid them to inspect of sewer lateral. They assured us it was in great condition (in writing). Turns out they only inspected the first 40% of the lateral. The rest of the 60 feet of lateral were close to collapsing. We found out the truth of the condition of the lateral after we bought the property. To date they refuse to make good on their assurance that the lateral was "in great condition" and have refused to make good on their incompetent technician's inspection. They gave this assurance in writing. In effect, they lied to us in order to make a few hundred dollars. We relied on their inspection results (they did not even inspect the damaged 60' long area of the sewer lateral!) As a result we have spent about $30,000 on unexpected repairs. When your employee lies about their work and it causes damages to your client, you should take responsibility for the damages. Apparently Boyd Plumbing recently was acquired by Bonney Plumbing. But they operate under both names. From 3/1/22: I have been calling and leaving messages for 3 work days for the manager to talk to me about a serious problem with a previous service. I was given the names of Nick Camuso and his boss Sam. Neither one has bothered to even give me the courtesy of a return phone call. Their website presents the company a a caring and responsive company. This is not my current experience. Four years ago we bought a home in Sacramento. We hired Boyd Plumbing (Boyd was recently acquired by Bonney Plumbing, Electrical, Heating & Air) to video our sewer lateral. The tech was prompt, inspected the lateral, and notified us that the sewer lateral was in good condition. Three weeks ago we had a major problem with the sewer lateral - so far a $10,000 emergency service bill with an estimate of $19,000 addition in repairs. Turns out the sewer lateral is 130' long and the inspecting plumber (4 years earlier) had only videoed 45' feet of it. It turns out that the last 90' were not in good shape and need replacing 4 years ago. The plumber never told us that he only videoed 1/3 of the lateral. Had he videoed the entire lateral, we could have required the seller to repair the lateral before we bought the property. Now that option is lost. The lack of response by Bonney Plumbing, Electrical, Heating & Air is not appreciated.
My toilet seemed to be leaking from around the base, especially in front. September 10, 2020 I had a "diagnostic" appointment with Boyd Plumbing after paying $39. for this visit. The "technician" (why don't they call them plumbers?) arrived and I took him into the bathroom and stated that I thought it was leaking in front from around the base. I was thinking maybe the seal was worn out. The technician leaned over and touched the floor behind the toilet and immediately diagnosed it as (quote from written estimate) "Emergency stop replacement at bathroom with shower: Customer has a leaky emergency stop. Boyd Plumbing will drain water system, and replace emergency stop and supply." Time needed 1 hr, Price: $375 -$50 discount for an amount of $325. He then proceeded to try to upsell me toward the purchase of a new toilet. "Customer has moisture at the front of the toilet. The emergency stop is leaking in on and off position. However toilet might have a hairline crack. Boyd Plumbing will remove old toilet........etc." That cost would be $575 after a discount of $100 for bundling of services. So by the time the job would have been completed it would have taken 2 hrs and cost me nearly $1,000. The technician never examined the inside of the toilet tank. The technician never got down and really checked out the toilet or touched the bottom of the tank. It was as if he had a regular answer no matter what the problem and his job was to try to sell me as many services and products as possible. As it turns out the ONLY problem with my toilet was that the toilet flush valve needed replacing, the gasket at the bottom was worn out. It wasn't leaking from the emergency stop nor does my toilet have a hairline crack, it was leaking from the bottom of the tank below the valve. The Toilet Flush Valve repair kit cost me $20.23 at the hardware store and was a 15 minute job. And I wasted $39.00 paying BOYD PLUMBING for a lack of real diagnostics and who only wanted to sell me services and products I did not need. I don't know how other plumbing companies work but I sure can't recommend Boyd.
8.29.17 update: My water heater went out last night so of course I called Boyd again because I had such great service last time. Today Eric was sent out and he quoted $1300 to repair the water heater which includes (but not 100% certain this was the problem): cleaning the burner $348 (last time I paid $78) Replace burner assembly $751, replace pilot assembly $351 and the gas control valve $570 --- he would discount it down to $1300 for a total package. If I wanted to just replace the WH he quoted me $2100!! $2100 for a Bradford White with 6 year warranty. I even confirmed with him, "$2100 for just replacing the water heater and no other work?" and was told yes. (The WH I currently have is a crappy brand, American Standard and still under warranty, but it took well over a month to receive a warranty part that luckily wasn't needed after all.) I called and got 2 quotes from other companies, and was quoted half the price or a little over half.... HALF!! Obviously I went with another company. Buyer Beware! Don't be ripped off! **************************************** After dealing with two other plumbers from 2 other companies, I decided to take a chance and call Boyd Plumbing to see what they had to offer. It's really hit or miss out here in Sac when it comes to quality and service so I couldn't just settle for what the other two were telling me. Sure glad I did. I don't remember who I spoke with on Fathers Day when my 3 year old water heater went out, but it was followed up by a call from Vanessa to see if I still needed assistance. They sent John out early the next morning and the problem turned out to be something totally different than what the other two companies said and it saved me over $250! I would highly recommend them and will use them again in the future if needed. Thank you Boyd Plumbing, for being a decent and honest company.
I had an issue with my sump pump float switch. I called Boyd. The plumber came out to give us a free estimate. I'm giving this a 4* review because the plumber himself, Jon, I feel was a great guy. He was on time, and kind and respectful all around. What I didn't like, was that the fixed price structure didn't feel fair to me. To get a further estimate, he had to place some code in the system that showed a $760 dollar fee for him to further assess what was going on. He knew that was a lot, so he included a $200 dollar discount. So it was going to cost $560 before I had an idea of the actual cost. I was uncomfortable, so again he looked at price codes, and he found another one that was $288 for an "inspection". I was "ok" with that, as long as this went toward the price. I asked what the price would be if the likely scenario of the float needing to be replaced and if the $288 would cover that. He checked, and that would be $480 for that service. I asked him how much the part would cost. He said $100 for the part + $180 fo the installation + $200 for (I forget). I checked on homedepot's website and the price was $25 for the part. I just didn't feel good about moving forward and I said I'd have to reconsider using them. Jon was great, and he supported me in my choice. I proceeded to buy the part and install it myself. Summary - Boyd seems to be a high quality service, but their price model for fixed services can really seem to backfire and get expensive if you have a simple task.
It is difficult to imagine why I would call Boyd ever again. Maybe they have good techs and according to other reviews they are responsive. But ... We bought a new faucet for the kitchen sink. Boyd came out to give us an estimate for installation and refused to bid the job because we did not have a pressure regulator on the home. Additionally, they complained about access, need to pull the disposal, and need to replace the two shutoff valves under the sink. They were eager to leave. So I installed the pressure regulator and called Boyd again to bid the faucet task. Boyd gave a bid for the job of $570 to replace the faucet (see the picture). Half the bid was to replace the shut off valves. I told the tech that was insane; the valves slip on, cost $10 each, and can be swapped out in 15 minutes. He said this is their fixed cost pricing. I told the tech to go away. I understand fixed cost service providers amortize the cost of repair based on all such similar jobs BUT when it crosses over into the insanity zone they need to find a way to be reasonable. Nearly $600 to install a kitchen faucet is NOT reasonable! I did the job myself. I had to make a couple trips to ACE because I didn't have the parts or the tools. It took me several hours (including trips to ACE). The new shutoff valves slipped off and new ones were on in 15 minutes as I predicted. I was willing to pay $200 or $250.
I responded to a Craigslist ad that emphasized fast service and the lowest price. The ad actually stated: Sacramento Plumber - Immediate Service -- Craigslist Discount - FREE ESTIMATES - (916) 426-2784- LOWEST RATES Edward arrived about 6 hours after my call. He was very pleasant. He looked at my simple faucet installation -- I'm old and didn't think I could reach under and around the sink to achieve proper mounting. Then he quoted $140 for about 30 minutes of work. Of course, this turned out to be only a free estimate. I sent him away and tackled the job myself. Took me 40 minutes. Would have taken him 20 minutes. Figuring out how to reach under and around the sink was the delay for me (I stacked some seat cushions to raise my shoulder and arm). Let me be clear. I'm not saying that Boyd Plumbing is a lousy plumbing company. Quite to the contrary, I suspect, given Edward's visible professionalism. What I am saying is that the advertising is bait. The service was NOT immediate or even prompt. No discount was offered in conversation or when I asked. And the rate is certainly extremely high for a half hour job. Well, they need to pay for the pretty truck and the guarantee. BTW, I had already found a licensed handyman who quoted a firm $50 to install the faucet. But he was out of town and I needed it done today.
Had Zeb G. from Boyd Plumbing out to descale our tankless water heater. That was completed quickly with minimal water outage. Full operation and better hot water temperatures were completely restored. (If you have a tankless hot water heater this must be done once a year. It's a little expensive but worth it to protect your investment in the tankless system). While there I had Zeb check our water pressure as Boyd had previously installed a pressure regulator. (Citrus Heights has ridiculously high water pressure and it does damage plumbing fixtures and pipes in your house.) At 5 years old that unit also needed to be replaced. Zeb is very knowledgeable and works with you to get discounts (something those of us on fixed incomes appreciate) and get the job done quickly and properly. Zeb had previously found a leak I couldn't locate. Using some pretty advanced equipment he found and took care of the leak (which required major effort and some demolition to fix). Professional plumbing repairs are expensive these days so you want to feel like you're getting a fair price and the quality of work you want. This is how we feel with Boyd Plumbing.
